Lowell Observatory - Flagstaff's Gateway to the Stars

Observatory was established in 1894, placing it among the oldest observatories in the United States, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965.  In 2011, the Observatory was named one of "The World's 100 Most Important Places" by TIME magazine.

The Observatory's original 24-inch (0.61 m) Alvan Clark Telescope is still in use today for public education. Lowell Observatory hosts 85,000 visitors per year at their Steele Visitors Center who take guided daytime tours and view various wonders of the night sky through the Clark Telescope and other telescopes. It was founded by astronomer Percival Lowell, and run for a time by his third cousin Guy Lowell of Boston's well-known Lowell family. The current trustee of Lowell Observatory is William Lowell Putnam III, grandnephew of founder Percival Lowell and son of long-time trustee Roger Putnam. The position of trustee is historically handed down through the family.

The observatory operates several telescopes at two locations in Flagstaff. The main facility, located on Mars Hill just west of downtown Flagstaff, houses the original 24-inch (0.61 m) Clark Refracting Telescope, although its role today is as a public education tool and not research. The telescope, built in 1896 for $20,000, was assembled in Boston by Alvan Clark and then shipped by train to Flagstaff. Also located on the Mars Hill campus is the 13-inch (0.33 m) Pluto Discovery Telescope, used by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930 to discover the dwarf planet Pluto.

It’s funny because I never used to enjoy Valentine’s Day when I was in a relationship; I seem to enjoy it much more when I’m single. This obviously means that I love myself more than anyone else. But hey, at least I can find good in the holiday. The thing that will be going on in abundance today is kissing, and hand holding, but mostly the kissing. Today’s infographic gives some facts on the history and mechanics of kissing. It’s kind of funny to think that there is so much information surrounding an activity that is so natural to most of us. Coconino Coalition for Children and Youth (CCC&Y), a leading advocacy and child abuse prevention agency, has recently led the effort to gain national recognition for Flagstaff as a 100 Best Community for Young People for the second year in a row. CCC&Y and Flagstaff Unified School District (FUSD) are again co-sponsoring a community wide youth celebration event to highlight this award and to honor our youth and those who serve and support them. To kickoff this full day of events and activities throughout Flagstaff, we are hosting a FREE pancake breakfast for all children, youth and families at Flagstaff High School from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. We invite you to join us in this celebration. Valentine's Day Concert with Anne & Pete Sibley

Flagstaff Cultural Partners is hopelessly devoted to providing a memorable and fun Valentine’s Day evening. Grab a date and a pair of tickets for the 6th Annual Valentine’s Concert at the Coconino Center for the Arts on Valentine’s Day 2013. Folk duo Anne and Pete Sibling perform in concert at the Coconino Center for the Arts on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at 7:30pm. Doors will open at 6:30pm for a wine and chocolate tasting before the concert begins. Fine wines and chocolates created by local chocolatiers will be served in the gallery and are included with the purchase of a ticket for the evening’s concert.

 In doing so their fluid harmonies and songwriting are able to take center stage. Along with an easy going stage presence that leaves space for deep listening, Anne and Pete invite the audience to be part of a music experience. An experience which they hope will call each person to awaken their own simple joyful melody within themselves. They have been humbled by the thousands of people who have supported them on their own journey which started with a simple “Yes” to their heart’s passion of singing.

Less than a decade since they released their first album, the Sibleys’ music hit the national spotlight in 2009 with a blue ribbon finish in the “Great American Duet Sing Off” on National Public Radio’s A Prairie Home Companion. CD releases include: Coming Home(2009)Will You Walk With Me (2005), Winter on the Great Divide (2007) and Think of This River(2004).
