Skyride to the Sunset at Arizona Snowbowl

ARIZONA SNOWBOWL OFFERS UNIQUE SUNSET  CHAIRLIFT SKYRIDE  WHAT? Sunset Chairlift Ride:  Friday, June 14, and every second Friday of the month through October.   Scenic Chairlift Rides 10am - 4pm, Friday, Saturdays and Sundays through the summer. "The higher you go, the longer you'll see the sun sinking into the West..." "The Chairlift Ride offers one of the most beautiful sights and adventures in the Southwest," said National Park Service Interpretive Ranger John Westerlund. "The chairlift goes from 9,500 to 11,500 feet in elevation and is slowed down to about a third of its ski-season speed. This gives guests a fantastic opportunity to really look out across Arizona's vast open lands dotted with cinder cones. You glide through various life zones from the cork bark fir, the Douglas fir and aspens to the Alpine Tundra. What's also fascinating is that at 11,500 feet, you are higher than the tops of many ski lifts around the Intermountain West!" Westerlund recommends being prepared with a light jacket and binoculars. "You can see the Red Rocks of Oak Creek Canyon, the mountains around Sedona, west Flagstaff, the Mogollon Rim, Mingus Mountain, the 'J' on the mountain in Jerome, the airfield out in Prescott and the Grand Canyon!" WHEN? Normal days and hours for the Scenic Chairlift Ride are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, along with holiday Mondays throughout the summer. On Sunset Chairlift Ride Fridays, hours will be extended to 6 p.m. Those not riding may purchase the barbecue dinner separately at the Peak Side Café in the Agassiz Lodge. Ride tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children and seniors. Those under 7 or over 70 ride for free! In addition, live music will add to the festive atmosphere on weekend afternoons at the Peak Side Café.

Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night throughout the summer, Heritage Square hosts events for all ages! Live music on Thursdays, art/theater/dance on Fridays, and Movies on the Square on Saturdays. And, of course, on each First Friday of the month, all of downtown Flagstaff becomes the destination for ArtWalk. All events are free and open to the public. An exciting addition to this summer’s program is the Bi-Cultural Road Show, featuring four Latin Performance Troupes: The Carpetbag Brigade, Nemcatacoa Teatro, Hojarasca, and Verbo-Bala. The Bi-Cultural Road Show expands the understanding and appreciation of Latin Culture beyond the Mexican Border by being a living display of creative co-existence. Over the summer, the public is invited to attend concerts and performing art workshops presented by the troupes. Northern Arizona University Dance Team hip hop Champions

Dance Team hip-hops way to national championship

March 19, 2013

The Northern Arizona University Dance Team won the 2013 USA Collegiate Championship in the hip hop division, marking the team’s first national title in program history.

The squad defeated in-state rival Arizona, as well as five other Pac-12 schools in winning the team honor Monday in Anaheim.

“I am so proud of this team,” said Cassie Laughlin, director of Cheer and Dance. “To win the program’s first national championship is a testament to how hard these girls work each and every day.”

The squad returned from the UDA National Championship event in Florida this January with improvements in mind following its sixth-place finish. Laughlin noted that the team took everything the judges said a couple months ago and pushed each day to get better.

“To go from sixth to first is a dream come true for all of us,” she said.

The NAU Dance Team also competed this weekend in jazz, placing seventh in the Open Dance competition.
